PRETPARK NEDERLAND
Director: Michiel van Erp The Netherlands, 2006, 90' Dutch with Turkish subtitles
The Dutch do strange things in their leisure hours. This is much clear in Michiel van Erp's documentary about the places where the average Dutchman spends his free time: Bataviastad, the Efteling, the Libelle week somewhere in the polder, Gay Pride and the Prinsengracht concert. In his traditional tongue-in-cheek style, Van Erp portrays the participants and the organizers of the events. A group of touring Chinese tourists form the leitmotif, witnessing all the events with the same innocent amazement. With frequently hilarious scenes, the film provides a keen insight into the national character of the Dutch who, with transparent tricks, try to entice the public en masse to leave the provinces and travel to Amsterdam to spend a day out 'looking at homos', and breaking every prohibition and all social conventions for a good spot on the canal for a free concert.
