An intergovernmental organization established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. With 146 member states in more than 450 field locations, IOM assists governments and migrants to promote international cooperation on migration issues. Since 1991, IOM is working in Turkey on the field of migration. Among other activities, the “Raising Awareness on International Migration in Istanbul” initiative aims at ensuring the recognition of the phenomenon of international migration in Istanbul, breaking the prejudices and highlighting the benefit of migration on the social, economic and cultural life of Istanbul. Therefore, IOM Istanbul works on increasing the awareness of the public about who the migrants are and why they are migrating to Turkey.
