CLOUD CUCKOO LAND
Erik Moskowitz, Amanda Trager, USA, Canada, 2008, video, color, 17'
How does one live the best possible life in the best possible world? How can one escape one's condition and free oneself of shackles? By inventing a different society, different stories, different images together? The film attempts this experiment: utopia. Until the individual catches up with the collective: parody.
DEVIL COME TO HELL AND STAY WHERE YOU BELONG
Massimilian and Nina Breeder, USA, 2008, video, color, 86'
In the solitude of the Californian desert they are crossing, this pair of filmmakers starts a travel diary, combining their fantasies with the reality around them. The heat quickly becomes just as stifling as the sight of animal carcasses and disembowelled landscapes filmed along the road. Inexorably, humans and their desires devour everything.
LA DÉRIVE
Philippe Terrier-Hermann, France, 2009, video, color, 60'
Philippe Terrier-Hermann is an artist, a Prix de Rome winner, a photographer, and he also makes films. His subject is the bourgeoisie. This time he shows two idle students in a canoe who get involved with two dropouts on a raft. Just as inspired by symbolist painting as he is by Georges Bataille, he examines the fine line between the hero and the loser - this difficulty we have in identifying our own referents. Are the two boatmen messiahs or miserable wretches? Is this passage down-river a descent into hell or an initiatory voyage? Camp fire and acoustic guitar: the singer of the group Aaron is fit as a fiddle in this contemplative sitcom about capitalism.
DESPAIR
Galina Myznikova, Sergey Provorov, Russia, 2008, video, color, 29'
Insignificant within the immensity of a snowy landscape, a handful of men oppose their physical resistance to the force of nature. United, close together, they tackle the hostility surrounding them by way of a strangely choreographed, hesitant ballet. A visual poem of furious beauty, Despair depicts the mechanisms of a world governed by crows
