For the fifth edition at Pera Museum, Pera Film welcomes Centre Pompidou’s Hors Pistes under two different themes: Silence of the Animals and Special Focus: Phil Collins.
Based on the title book by French philosopher and author Elisabeth de Fontenay’s “Silence of the Animals” – this program explores the relationship between humans and animals. The human seeks to humanize the animal to penetrate its mystery. Attempts alternate between absurdity and poetry. With great humility or great folly, humankind seeks to bring the animal to share in: on an obscure language. “You have to be a brute not to attribute suffering, interiority, subjectivity, and understanding to animals. But one risks falling prey to stupidity by continuing to deny that men feel, communicate, express themselves, and produce differently and better than even the most human of animals," believes de Fontenay. The program includes three feature films and several shorts.
Phil Collins’s art investigates our ambivalent relationship with the camera as both an instrument of attraction and manipulation, of revelation and shame. 2006 Turner Prize nominated artist and filmmaker Collins’, works range from a day long disco dance marathon filmed in Ramallah to a series of Columbian nationals singing along, sometimes phonetically, to tracks by The Smiths. Often with a slightly humorous level of accompanying visual intrigue, Collins uses his subjects as vehicles with which to pose questions about society and its politics. In his latest work, marxism today, he focuses on the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the affect it had on those living and working in the former GDR.
