Hiroshima, 1958. A French actress is working on an antiwar film. Shooting, weeks over schedule, is finally nearing its end. Forty-eight hours before her departure, she meets a Japanese man. Their imaginations weave the city’s tragic memories into their lovemaking. With Hiroshima My Love, cinema shows the suggestive power of memory, drawing on the poetry of words with a literary dialogue and newsreels as documentary traces of history. As for fiction, it belongs to the sphere of experience, the experience that links the images of a past reality with their movement towards the characters’ present and especially the present of the audience watching them.
