The film takes place in a grand, baroque château: a huge static space all gold and marble with endless corridors, slender pillars, richly ornate ceilings, statues, mute servants and deserted grounds. The guests in this odd kind of hotel drift about as if out of some sort of strange fatality, living a jaded, pampered, ritual existence (card games, dominos, tired balls, idle gossip and shooting exercises). Everyone in this prison-like luxury hotel embodies sclerosis and hypnosis. A handsome man with an Italian accent moves through the architecture of the labyrinthine château as if he can’t quite find his way. He is driven to follow and talk to a beautiful woman who he claims to have met the year before. However, she doesn’t remember or doesn’t want to remember.
